I was pleased and honored to be sworn in as the Alderman of Chicago’s 1st Ward on March 26, 2010. As Alderman, I’ll look for community-based solutions to solve our biggest challenges. I’ll be a strong and independent advocate for the people of the 1st Ward in the Chicago City Council and no one else. |

Safety Update & Self-Defense Seminars
Obviously, the latest incident (at the Asrai Garden flower shop ) worries me deeply. We are unable to share the specifics of it because of the ongoing investigation. The police have a description and have assured me they’re doing whatever possible to catch the perpetrator of this horrific crime.
The number of recent high-profile crimes in our neighborhood is extremely concerning. I have a full time staffer, almost exclusively, dedicated to crime and safety issues in the ward. We try to build CAPS attendance and community representation to increase safety at every opportunity.
There are three self-defense seminars coming up before the end of the month:
1) Guardian Angel Self-Defense Class for Wicker Park

Notes TONIGHT - NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Annually on the first Tuesday in August, all 25 Chicago Police Districts host an event. In the 1st Ward we have three police districts and the specifics of their events are below. All events take place TONIGHT!!!
13th District
Commercial Park, 1845 W. Rice Street
5 to 8 p.m.
Jesse White Tumblers, Chicago Police Mounted Unit, Canine Unit, Fire Truck, Bounce House, Music & Food.
14th District
14th police headquarters, 2150 N. California Ave.
5 to 9 p.m.
Ponies, Petting Zoo, Hula Hoop Contest, Bounce House, Bingo, Music & Food.
19th District
19th police headquarters, 2452 W. Belmont Avenue
6 to 8 p.m.
Music, Children’s Entertainment & Food and fun.

TONIGHT, I’ll be holding a community meeting to discuss two recent gang-related homicides in Beat 1411 (around the intersection of California and Wellington).
Join CPD Deputy Chief Escalante, 14th District Commander Flores and me to discuss the specific incidents and what’s being done to combat this unacceptable violence.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the 14th District Station, at 2150 N. California Avenue.

In collaboration with the sate and local law enforcement agencies nation wide, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will have a Drug Disposal Box in every Chicago Police District during the above date and time.
Bring your expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceuticals to the 13th District station for deposal.
Disposal will be FREE OF CHARGE. -

Taggers Arrested
Taggers Arrested: 14th District
Police officers arrested Peter Morocco & Matthew Ledajaks “BigL” (legs) and “KWT” (kids with talent) on 20 Aug 2010, for tagging buildings at Armitage and Damen.
Their graffiti has appeared throughout Bucktown and Wicker Park in the 32nd Ward. Court date is set for 16 Sep 2010, at 1:30 P.M. 5555 West Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL. Homeowners and business owners who have been tagged with KWT or Big L are strongly encouraged to attend the proceedings.
